DIY Troubleshooting
Quick Tips & Copier Fixes
Straight from our Sharp-certified technicians — practical, step-by-step fixes for the most common copier problems.
Power off the copier completely and wait 30 seconds before opening any covers.
Open the indicated panels (the display shows a jam location diagram). Gently pull the jammed paper in the direction of paper travel — never back against it.
Check all paper trays and the output area for small torn pieces. Even a small scrap can re-trigger the jam sensor.
Close all covers firmly until they click. Power the machine back on.
Fan your paper stack before loading — humidity causes sheets to stick together. Use the correct paper weight for your model (most Sharp MFPs use 20–24 lb bond).
Place a blank sheet on the glass and make a copy. If the streak appears, the problem is the scanner glass or drum. If not, it’s in the print engine.
Clean the scanner glass with a lint-free cloth and glass cleaner. Pay special attention to the narrow strip of glass on the left side (used for ADF scanning).
Run the built-in cleaning cycle: go to System Settings → Copy Function → Image Quality Adjustment and run the drum cleaning routine.
If the streak is a fixed vertical line, the drum may be scratched and needs professional replacement. Call Copy Copy at 504-828-7686.
When you get a “Toner Low” alert, you typically have 200–500 pages left. Order a replacement immediately to avoid an emergency.
Remove the toner cartridge and gently shake it side to side. This redistributes remaining toner and can extend life by 50–100 pages.
Always use genuine Sharp toner. Third-party toners can void your warranty and damage the drum — a much costlier repair.
When installing the new cartridge, pull the protective tape slowly and evenly, then slide into place until it clicks. Run a test print immediately.
Print a network configuration page: Home → Settings → Printer Settings → Print Information List → Network Configuration. Note the IP address.
From a computer, open a browser and type the copier’s IP address. If the web interface loads, your network connection is fine — the issue is the driver or print queue on the computer.
If the web interface doesn’t load, power cycle the copier. Also check that the Ethernet cable is seated firmly in both the copier and the switch/router.
If your IP address starts with 169.x.x.x, the copier isn’t getting a DHCP address from your router. Try assigning a static IP: Settings → Network Settings → TCP/IP → IP Address.
For driver issues, download the latest driver from our Drivers page and reinstall.
Weekly: Wipe down the control panel and glass surface. Check paper levels and verify toner status via the display.
Monthly: Clean all paper path rollers with a damp lint-free cloth. Remove dust from ventilation slots with compressed air.
Quarterly: Run a drum cleaning cycle. Check feed rollers for wear — they should feel slightly tacky, not smooth or shiny.
Annually: Schedule a professional PM visit. Most Sharp machines need a full PM every 100,000–200,000 pages depending on the model. Copy Copy’s maintenance agreements include this automatically.
Lx-xx codes (e.g., L4-10): These are fuser errors. Power off, wait 5 minutes, and power back on. If persistent, the fuser unit may need replacement.
Ex-xx codes (e.g., E7-01): These indicate scanner or communication errors. Try restarting. If persistent, it’s a hardware issue requiring a technician.
U1-xx codes: Paper feed errors. Check all trays for correct paper loading and that guides are set to the correct paper size.
Note the exact error code before calling for service — it helps our technicians bring the right part on the first visit and saves you time.
